Vista Service Pack One

You may have heard some of the early rumblings about Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) back in May. In August, Nick White on the Vista blog team officially announced it's existence, and late last month, Microsoft began a private beta of it.

I wanted to share some basic details about SP1. It includes a number of fixes that will provide greater battery life for mobile systems and greater overall reliability and application compatibility.

Here are some basic questions that I wanted to provide some perspective on:

What is a Service Pack?

Once a major OS is released, issues will begin to crop up.  In the case of Microsoft, they will release a number of fixes until a critical mass is reached.  Once the requisite number of fixes is complete, Microsoft will test and deliver a Service Pack.  This is because it is necessary to test the fixes as a cohesive whole to ensure that they all work and play well together.  In the case of Vista the Beta level version of the 1st service pack has just been released for early testing.

What fixes are in Windows Vista Service Pack 1?

In Vista Service Pack 1 has added 300+ fixes (approximately 50 Mb) many of which the casual user will not notice.  However, there are several fixes designed to improve Battery Life, Performance, Reliability and Application Compatibility.  The performance improvements that are most noticeable are around media and file copying.  There will also be changes to the way wireless connectivity works.  For the Business IT department, Vista SP1 makes a number of changes related to way Vista is administered on a network.  Overall, the service pack provides everyone with a better product.

What will Dell do to ensure that Vista SP1 works best on Dell Systems?

Dell has been working with Microsoft on Vista Service Pack 1 for several months now.  Much of our time, early on, has been around working with Microsoft to determine what fixes and design changes to the existing OS will be included in the final release of the Service Pack.  In addition we have been working with Microsoft on verifying individual fixes before they are included in the service pack.  We have also been busy working with Microsoft on the test plans for the service pack.  Now that we have Beta 1 in house we will begin our comprehensive testing of the OS.  In all by the time of release we will have tested the service pack with teams from all over the world to ensure Vista Service Pack 1 works well with Dell systems.  Much of our testing will not only be testing the Service Pack for factory installation, but also verifying the upgrade path to ensure that our customers who purchased Vista will be able to upgrade their Dell systems to Service Pack 1 with no problems.

Should I upgrade to Vista Service Pack 1?

Remember that we are still in the Beta testing stage, but with the changes to battery life, reliability, and application compatibility that are in build and working the answer is an unqualified YES.   While there is much testing left to do and I am sure several changes to come, Vista SP1 resolves the vast majority of the issues and annoyances I have had with Vista Gold.  I would not recommend for the casual user to go out and join the beta program to get a copy now, when the beta is complete, Vista SP 1 will be available on Windows Update and all users should then strongly consider installing the update.  Windows Update provides an excellent and reliable mechanism to get SP1 once it is released and will allow all Windows Gold customers to get up to SP1 quickly and easily.

Hi,

Just too add some bugs too.. Vista SP RC1 crashes on Dell Inspiron 1520 with 8600.. I had the same issue when updating through usual Windows Update. Some drivers are causing some issues!!

 Hey Dell Team,

I read that SP1 has been RTM, I was wondering when you will be shipping systems with SP1.

Any timetable?

I'd like to know the same. It is now March 11th 2008 and I am hoping that within the next month your Optiplex and Latitude lines will have SP1 preinstalled to save us time when we order a few dozen systems in the near future. Any ETA at all on this?

On my Inspiron 9400 I have some of the Sigmatel drivers which are causing Microsoft to withhold the service pack.  How long will it be before Dell release an updated version of this driver as I would like to enjoy the increased performance etc.

I am one of many who was stimied by the SP1 update.  My 2.5 week old XPS M1330 was not able to use Windows Update due to driver incompatibility.  The company who makes the audio circuit (Sigmatel) has gone out of business, and neither they nor their successor will answer questions regarding audio driver support for this laptop.

Will you confirm that Dell will correct these driver problems, or do I have to return the laptop for a full refund?

thank you

I have a Dell inspiron 1501 laptop with vista home premium installed.

I have tried 9 times to download the Service Pack 1 software from windows update and it fails to install at stage 3 of 3 and showing 100% installed and then reboots and reverts back to it`s previous state. I have also tried to install the full 400mb download and that does the same.

I have noted after further research that there may be a problem with drivers that my laptop uses regarding the sigma tel audio and i`ve tried the latest drivers from dell and also uninstalling the drivers and switching the sound card off. Service pack 1 fails to install everytime and after waiting 3 hours to install and uninstall each time i try its geting very tedious.

Any 1 have any ideas at all how i can get this to work.

Is Dell providing a CD/DVD copy of the Service pack and if so where can I get hold of it?

If not can you suggest a reliable place to download it?

Thanks

I spent the better part of 3 days trying to install SP1 on a Home Premium Acer system. I rarely ever quit trying when it comes to computer issues and with all my tests and Googling...I had to finally give up. One thing that did work, is a fresh Install. You've probably heard that one before. On 2 PCs, one with Ultimate and another with Home Premium, SP1 installed without a hitch.

When I was doing my tests, I literally disabled...then eventually UNINSTALLED every prgm in my PC....turn on every service and uninstalled all hotfixes....except 4 which would not leave me. I think one or all 4 of those hotfixes were responsible because on a fresh Installation, I had NOT 1 KB/hotfix update and the stand alone SP1 pkg installed perfectly! I previously had a BETA version of SP1 so that may have been and issue....or simply....SP1 likely has a glitch!

On a negative note...what's up with MS? You go through this intensely long SP1 install only to find it FAILED after it hits Stage 3 of 3 at 100%. I have heard others freak out about this and I don't blame them. Even the error code has little information as to the cause. I bit of thought in the programming dept would have gone a long way. Gee...how about....doing a system check FIRST to determine compatibility....it would of saved me MANY hours! I am not alone on this issue....am I?

I have an Inspiron 9400 laptop.  Vista service pack 1 is not offered through Windows update.  None of the issues referred in the Microsoft site apply.  Is this planned or is there a problem with my computer?

Thanks.

I got a Dell xps 1330 just a week ago and i'm struggling with the instalation of SP1 ever since. When I run the SP1 exe, after 20 secs I get the same internal error message. I tried everything - updating all drivers, disc scan/check, calling MS support center 10 times and still nothing..

Any suggestions? :)
