Simplifying Recycling for Small Businesses

Today, we're introducing a way for small business customers to recycle unwanted computer equipment.

Customers in the United States with fewer than 10 pieces of computer equipment can contact their sales representative to request a personal asset recovery number for our new Web-based service. Upon completion of the process, we provide a report of how the system's data was cleansed and how the system was recycled. Customers have the option of ordering enhanced packaging and can monitor the status of their equipment during the shipping process. This StudioDell video provides a good overview of how the process works. This PDF does too.

Why single out small businesses? A recent IDC survey commissioned by Dell found that small companies are far less likely to use IT disposal services compared with medium- and large-size companies. An estimated 11 percent of companies with fewer than 100 employees intend to use an IT disposal service, compared with 65 percent of companies with 10,000 or more employees, the survey found.

By providing simple and affordable asset recovery options, we hope to enable small business customers to 1) take advantage of secure, affordable and environmentally-responsible asset disposal and 2) become part of The ReGeneration, people of all ages who care about the environment.

As always, we welcome your thoughts, comments and ideas on ways we can enhance our environmental programs. You can post them here or visit IdeaStorm. If you're interested in learning more about responsible asset disposal, you can visit our Small Business Recycling website or check out a recent article I wrote for GreenerComputing.com for more insight.

This is a service that I want to take advantage of for my company. But I live in Canada. It's kind of like reading about the iPhone. I want it, but I can't buy it.

Do you have any plans to offer the service to small businesses in Canada?

Joe: Hey... thanks for reaching out to Direct2Dell and sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I reached out to some of the folks behind this effort and this is what they had to say:

Even though we currently offer this new service to only customers in the United States, we are always exploring ways for businesses, regardless of size or location, to properly and securely dispose of their equipment. We’ll be sure to use Direct2Dell to communicate more developments if we expand this program in the future.

What in the heck fire is going on....twice this has happened to me.  I live miles out in the country and receive my mail at a PO Box in Blanchard, OK.  ALL MY MAIL GOES THERE.  But, because I HAVE to order ink cartridges from Dell and they DO NOT send to a PO Box, I had to install a mail box with the 911 address.   But, the postmaster will not leave in the mail box because Dell sends the cartridges Certified Mail and he takes them back to the PO in Blanchard, OK where I have to drive in and pick them up.....guess where?.....yep, your right, my PO Box.  This delays me receiving my cartridges when I need them and makes absolutely no sense.

I have had this PO Box for many years and would appreciate them sending them directly to the PO Box and avoid the DELAYS.....this is a very small town and everyone knows everyone.....what is the big deal?  This is a United States Post Office in small town rural America.

Had I known of this hassle in the beginning, I would have made a different choice than purchasing a DELL PRODUCT......YOU SHOULD TELL PEOPLE THIS UP FRONT....I AM A 501-C 3 Non Profit and things I have to do need to be done in a timely fashion....delaying me 4 or 5 days while I have to chase the ink cartridges down is just damn ridiculous.....You should be able to flag my account and KNOW that I prefer my ink cartridges to come SAFELY to my PO Box and they do not require Certified Mail for delivery.

Please let me know if this can be rectified ASAP.  This is the third time this has gone on and it is NOT GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE.
