Erm - that link is for the *vista* driver for that modem !?

How's one supposed to use such a .exe for using the driver with Ubuntu ?
The download link above was incorrect, but it's fixed now. The download is a .deb package

I can't find a direct e-mail to John Hull or any other person in charge of the web page you direct us to; so, I'll post here.

You may want to change the "Installation Instructions" to be a little more clear.  Here are some suggestions:

"Type your password in the password field and press ." => "Type your password in the password field and press THE OK BUTTON."

"Click anywhere inside the terminal window and press ." => "Click anywhere inside the terminal window and press ENTER."

"Press to accept the default when . . ." => "Press ENTER to accept the default when . . . "

P.S. Under "Important Information" you say their might be a need to reboot.  Would there ever really be a need to reboot?  If so, then maybe put this in the "Installation Instructions" as well.

P.P.S  Dell, thank you for following through with your promise and providing Linux on your computers.  We applaud you for listening to your own customers and helping them reach what they want to achieve.  May this step prove VERY beneficial for Dell.

Maybe you should also correct your wiki at http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php/Tech/Modems
Phil said:

Errrm - I hate to be a partisan, but not all of us use Ubuntu (or Debian).

Can we have a source tarball, please? 100% of users could make use of that.

Mace Moneta said:
Please consider offering a real modem instead of a Winmodem in Linux models.  If you did that, no driver would be needed.
John Hull, Manager of Linux OS Engineering said:

Michael: The wiki has been updated

Phil: We'll get a tarball of the driver posted so that you can use it on other distros. The driver is not open-source, but it should work on other Linux distros

Jack Ripoff said:
Where can I get the source code of the driver and the programming documentation of the modem, please?
Joseph said:

Great!  Thank you, Dell.

John said:
Awesome Dell! Thanks. Keep it up, and I'll keep buying Dell.

@Phil: You _do_ know Ubuntu is the version of Linux that Dell is bundling with their machines, don't you? Thus it is perfectly rational for them to offer Ubuntu (Debian) drivers. If you need to convert it to RPM or whatever I'm sure a bit of Googling will help you.

@Mace Moneta: Modems are yesterdays tech, it is cheaper to do it in software than in hardware these days. We (in the open source community) have bigger fish to fry than dumb Winmodems.

Conexant have traditionally charged for this stuff. I say congrats to Dell for releasing it into the wild gratis. But you'll never satisfy everybody, huh? Keep up the good work Dell, the amount of goodwill you are generating can only help you in the long run.

Thanks for the modem driver. Some people expect miracles overnight,  they do not speak for the majority of us. We apreciate the effort.

Take care,

People complaining about the current status/availability are obvioulsy quite new to the whole Linux driver topics, issues and problems.

The free availability of this particular driver is something a whole lot of ppl have been awaiting for years and years, in no matter what package it comes as long as it is there.

 Nice job, Dell. Finally.

Okay, I have been sitting on the fence waiting to see who would be willing to offer a laptop with a linux distro, but more importantly to see if the company is willing to stand behind the product. Dell, it is looking like you may have just convinced one undecided consumer to jump off the fence and place an order for your model 1420N.

I have been using Red Hat at home since release 7.0...sounds like it may be time for me to leap from the desktop to the laptop.

Thank you very much for providing the modem driver! It would be nice if it were open source, but even this is a step forward. But why are you not offering Intel graphics as an option on the Ubuntu desktop computers, since the Intel graphics are supported by open source drivers?

I am eagerly looking forward to buying a new Linux Laptop as soon as it is announced in Canada. This is another problem off my check list.

Hi Dell,

While i do congratulate you on the release, can you tell which chipsets work with this driver? I have a friend who has a compaq machine & hence uses one of the hsf & hcf driver. As obviously that is a 14.4 free one :(

While now I will be  suggesting them the Dell Inspirion E1505n as well  1420n for work use. Thanx a lot for making it easier & hopefully at some point it does make it to ubuntu restricted drivers repository.

Got a Dimension B110 with XP about a year ago, dual boot with Ubuntu and live in Guyana, South America. Dialup is still the main way to connect here.

This driver is a God sent for me. Now I can get a dedicated Linux machine.

Many who try Linux locally switch back to Windows because of poor Winmodem support.

Because of this driver my next PC will be a Dell.

Thank you Dell,

Raval

Thanks DELL for the support to our ubuntu users. I which Ubuntu and DELL all of the best for the feature and hope the relations will grow stronger every day.

thanks. works well with ubuntu feisty and installation is really easy.  if additional infos should be required for specific distros some links would be helpful. - i.e. the editors of the distros (if they have not already done so) should place there links here and in there wiki- or howto-sections!

When will you provide a driver version for amd64 architecture?!
UbuntuUser said:
One more vote for the amd64 version. For the growing number of users of this architecture this download is useless... Please release this too.

plz send me the drivers for dell ppl

I just upgraded to kernel 2.6.20-16 generic and my modem driver no longer works. Any chance of a driver compiled for the more recent kernel?

Just thanks a lot

Thank you so much for doing this Dell! You've earned some serious brownie points in my book. I used this driver on a Latitude D610 and it worked painlessly. Thanks again!

An amd64 version would be awesome.

btw, love Dells support for the linux community

If this driver had come one year earlier then certainly I should have gone for Inspiron 6400. Anyway good work from Dell people.
Miguelinux said:

Sorry, I installed Dell driver and works, but it seems there is the same velocity of Linuxant driver (< 14k) ????

what means free? Thanks.

Miguelinux said:
Sorry. I changed the string AT&FW.... and now works very well at 56K. I say again, sorry and thanks very much to Dell.
dane said:

Am running Ubuntu 7.10, official stable release. Have Inspiron 1520 notebook, are the modems the same as in the 1420? Have no other option of connecting to Internet! Also, is this the 14.4k free version or a fully fledged 56k one you Dell guys wrote yourself?

Great job in being more actively involved with Linux... though Mace Moneta above makes sense. No winmodems please!

Jason said:
Any hope/progress towards a 64-bit edition? Running in full amd64 mode rather than plain IA32 gives me the option of using either when it's faster. (e.g. amd64 for numerical work, IA32 for pointer-heavy work)
Keldom said:

Hi do you know if there is one driver for conexant for slackware distribution? I use slackware and i didn't find any drivers for now.. Thanks

Keldom,

I take it these (designated "oem") drivers are for Dell only. That would make sence, they cost money.

For real brownie points - consider a modem which uses free-software drivers. hsfmodem is closed-source.

But to totally ace it: use coreboot for bios. This will get Dell an endorsement by FSF and RMS would even start using these products!
