XPS M1330 Order Status Update

First of all, thank you for the great response to the XPS M1330!

Several of you have submitted comments and sent direct e-mails asking about lead times for the new notebook. For those customers who placed an order, you were quoted a ship date in August (~30 working days).

You should check the status of your order again over the next week, because we expect to begin shipping XPS M1330 notebooks, configured by our customers, from our factories starting tomorrow. With shipments heading out, our order system can now calculate a more targeted expected ship date for every order placed. Once we ramp up, expected ship dates will be updated regularly, so keep checking back on Dell.com, under "My Order Status" (upper right corner of the page). You'll need an order number and a second form of verification, like zip code, handy.

Update: 7/13: My apologies—I misinterpreted some of the information I received, so wanted to clarify. We expect existing orders to be delivered by the date given when you ordered. Because we have a backlog of systems to work through, we don't expect orders to ship ahead of their current scheduled dates. We'll work to ship systems quickly, and look forward to any feedback you might have on it.

While some of the updated ship dates will be sooner than the original dates, others may not improve much. Those orders include components that have limited initial supply, like the WLED display, the white display back and the 2.0MP web camera. In a nutshell, these are popular options and demand is exceeding supply.

When we have an update on the situation, I'll blog about it. In the meantime, thanks for your patience.

I just found this site by accident and what do you know.. M1330! The thing is, I had a conversation with Dell Sweden about M1330 and Ubuntu, and I was given the worst answer ever, NEVER! He said that M1330 will never ever be released with Ubuntu in Sweden, and instead suggested me to buy the D430. Has anyone ANY idea why the cool laptops are impossible to buy with anything else than Windows? Or with nothing at all? No vendor I know can sell a slim, beautiful piece with free software inside. If someone at Dell sees this, please make all of your systems available for customization.! It'd be the sweetest dream, the hardware I want WITH the software I want.
It's not that Ubuntu is free, but it's better than Windows in every aspect. Has anyone got an explanation for this behavior at Dell, LG, Toshiba, Fujitsu, Acer, Asus and all the rest? Who wants to be the first to REALLY open the market with the users choice?

Isnt the display option between the WLED and the WXGA with the 2mp webcam??? so you are saying you have a supply issue with BOTH screens?
Rob said:

The LED screen is experiencing delays.

The normal screen is not.  However, the 2.0 MP cam that is an "option" on the regualar screen IS.  lol.

So yes... it seems both of the more popular configs are in high demand.

Oh well.. this is the first Dell since my 700m I am excited about.  But I can't complain one bit.  My 700 is still an absolute tank and has not let me down yet.

I ordrered my XPS m1330 the evening of June 26th...I figured my order status would atleast update today if they started shipping them out today....so far no status update.

I called customer service which knew nothing of direct2dell's announcement of the July 11th shipping date. In the end I got no help. I don't want to compain, I guess I'm just frustrated that I ordered my m1330 the day it was released and have had no info on it's status since, even after Dell confirmed they would ship units today. :(

I have been following along on many hardware sites, and not one person on any site has seen any change in their est. ship date, or their order status. Let alone shipment.

Even if there is a shortage, surely you must have been able to ship some units out by now?

I ordered my M1330 and my estimated delivery date was pushed back a month after I submitted the order. July became August and I haven't seen any positive changes in my estimated delivery date. I love the design by XP would be nice. Vista is a hog unless you have at least 2GB. Better than XP would be Ubuntu or similar. Also, the rep I talked to said she would expedite my order and upgrade shipping to next-day. Later another rep said they couldn't expedite my order or even upgrade shipping to next-day. Training is in order @ Dell.

I ordered an M1330 on the 3rd of July in Japan, and was told the order would take 7-10 days, by the sales company (third party - not Dell).  After enquiing about the delivery date and checking whether I could upgrade the spec of the computer I was told that Dell would not change the order even though the delivery date has been postponed, with no indication of when the computer will actually arrive.

So far, not a satisfatory experience, but having said that, hats off to Dell for hitting such sweet spot of power, weight and design.

I can't help wondering though, whether quality control is going to suffer as a result of this problematic launch, and we are going to get stuck with computers that looked good on paper (and video) but aren't put together properly.

A pitty not all options (like WLED display) are available in the Latin America store (I'm from Argentina).

Also, there is no information about if a HDMI-DVI cable is included in the package, and no indication of what AC adapter is actually included :-P

It's funny that SSD 32GB is available at LA store but not in USA :-D

Hope more options came available (and less time to delivery!)

Yeah, I was also told 8-10 business days for it to be in my house, yet the estimated date in the email is August 23rd. The funny thing is that the order status screen has no estimated date at all. There's nothing to update because there's nothing there.

Patrick J said:

Welll....my delivery date was changed today indeed,,,they aded another 20 days, and suddenly the pre-produktion dates was set for today, just so it looks like its deliverd on time on paper ? i orderd min already the 26th june and will not get it until the 14th of agust. bummer.

why take orders on systems that they know in advance cant be deliverd in time and risk people getting iritated and cancel orders?

I am sorely disappointed at the lack of information and the mis-info that is fed to consumers.  I have been a Dell customer in the olden days (with the 333 Mhz Pentium computers) and had a very pleasant experience.  Dell had all my parts in stock and shipped my computer on-time.

This experience, however, has under-mined any positive experience I've had in the past.  I've been watching the forums and such, and I've seen really bad communication skills on behalf of Dell.  Its frustrating when detailed communication is not provided especially when our m1330 laptops aren't scheduled to be delivered until a few months later.  Even other people are laughing at me at the insane wait time!

This is not what I expected Dell to be...

Wow. Amazing. Misinterpreted information? How do you misinterpret "M1330s are not shipping anytime soon" as "M1330s to ship imminently!"

Far from impressed.
Lionel Menchaca, Chief Blogger said:

William: The part I mis-interpreted was the distinction between pending orders (ones that have been placed) and new orders.

As we ramp production, new orders are the ones that will see improvements in ship time, not pending orders. In other words, new orders will still ship after pending ones, but someone who places a new order will have a shorter preliminary ship date window (the time from the order being placed to when we expect to ship) than customers with pending orders experienced.

I think it would be nice if there were some online tools that would let me see what exactly Dell is waiting on when it comes to my order.

Guess my previous comment was killed as spam:

A pity that not all options are available to all Dell stores. In Latin America one, WLED display isn't available (also confirmed that by phone). I'm in Argentina

Funny is that SSD options IS available there, on contrary to USA store :-P

Also, there is a lack of details on what is included on package, since "aditional power adapters" seems like the notebook came without one ;-)

Will place my order when WLED is available! :-D

This is very dissappointing,  School at UM starts on Aug 20th, so I will have to wait.

Why would Dell offer systems, when it takes more than thirty (30) days to deliver???  Bad planning on Dell.

As long as I hit my ship date I will be fairly happy. BUT what is annoying me is that on another forum people are posting progress with their systems (moving to into build state  etc) and their order placed dates are after mine.

One guy had the same order as mine (except for a 2ghz cpu) ordered on July 5th and it is already in building stage. I order on June 27th and mine is still in pre-production! It had the LED screen, same color, everything.

It's like people jumping in line at the movies or something. You do not mind waiting, but when you see some punk walk up to the head of the line 10 mins before the tickets go on sale and cut in it makes you madder than anything.

So maybe you are giving people who are ordering now shorter est ship dates. But please do not expedite their orders over people who have been waiting since day one! The people who order early are the people who trust that Dell has made a good machine, and are will to put down a large about of money for a great product. Please do not screw them over.

Ed said:

... to add to Nick Young's comments ...

I also heard/seen about a person getting to the build stage with the SAME EXACT SYSTEM as me (I ordered July 1st -- he ordered a week after I did).  We both live in the United States so I was first shocked when I heard about this, but then my surprise turned to anger.  I was not happy at anyone or anything for a few hours.  How can Dell allow someone to cut people like this?  It is not fair to us who have been waiting patiently at all.

If Dell continues to do this, then they will earn a bad name on my book.

Even if it was not expected to be this popular they must have expected tens of thousands to be sold. And I have not read about anyone anywhere getting a system yet. There have only been three reviews on the net, and they all seem to be using pre-production models.

I mean it seems like we are not being told something if after two weeks next to no one (on the computer/notebook forums I read) has even gotten a shipping notice.

Trebuin said:

It's the 16, still in preproduction, scheduled to deliver by the 28th and I was told it won't actually arrive until between 1 Sept and 15 Sept :(   This is ridiculously long for shipping and I'm worry about my deployment which I was told is going to be in the beginning of Sept.

Why does Dell ship by boat?  Can't they do 3 day priority mail for APO boxes?  I would cut off 5 weeks of shipping time.  Oh well, here's to hoping that my laptop arrives before I deploy.

I hope this changes, because I only went through with the order when my rep said that the estimated ship date was a lie. If it ships now when it is said to ship, I won't have it nearly in time for school. I'm really sad about this, because this is the laptop that I want, but I'm going to have to get something that will ship sooner I guess, from somewhere. I ordered on the 11th (or at least, that's when my order issues were finally sorted out and it was finished) and am told not to expect delivery until early September...

 *Sigh*

Although, that seems like it would put it at well more than 30 working days, if working days are business days. So maybe there is hope yet? Gah.

Now, almost a month after the product announcement, Dell's FLAGSHIP STORE (the only non-kiosk in the entire country!) only has a non-working shell in the store. Whatever happened to shutting down the store from 2PM-6PM for an important product launch? Why didn't just one of these things get made for the only store in the country?

My order date was July 6th. Currently mine has an 8/23 ship date. (AAARGH)! I am not patient when it comes to my toys!!

FYI, it's the LED screen. Do some 'playing' around on the configurator. It'll (today is July 16th) start out with a delivery date of 8/14. As soon as you choose the LED (with or without the cam) it jumps to 8/31.

I tried to order on that very 1st day, but I had to wait until the 6th because of a screwy (Dell) delay in getting an owed credit posted to my account.

What is the delivery date of those that did get their orders in that first day? I'm curious just how much that few days delay in ordering cost me, delivery date wise...

Could we know if/when M1330 production has started for Europe?

The order status system shows that many customers (including myself) should expect delivery this week, but so far I have not seen any reports of the order status system showing that M1330s for Europe are in production although sales staff were saying last week that orders were in production and would be delivered on or before the estimated delivery date.

If M1330 production in Ireland has not yet started, Why? And when will it start?

Thank you.

Ok, so I purchased the M1330 on the morning of the 26th.  A few of my friends also purchased theirs on the 29th and one on the 1st.  I'm still in pre-production.  The guys who bought theirs on the 29 found their orders have been canceled due to "excessive lead time."  The one on the 1st has in order in the build stage.  The guys who's orders have been canceled tried to reorder, but found that the delivery date moved clear back to mid October.   Unfortunately for those guys, they decided not to reorder because of our deployment in September.

I'm lucky my order wasn't canceled, but I am concerned that the guy who ordered nearly a week after me and tons of other have their orders in production and mine is still waiting to go into production, and I have 10 days left until it should be delivered?

Charlie said:
The M1330 has been one heck of a ride. First, promised the regular 10-15 day wait time for a Dell system, then seeing the 45-50 day estimated ship date on my invoice. Reading this post and getting my hopes up that it'll get here sooner, and subsequently getting those hopes crushed by the update a few days later. It's all about setting expectations that can be delivered upon. That certainly has not happened.

Parts shortages are fine and dandy, but how can that be the case when no one has gotten a M1330, aside from pre-production units sent to reviewers? If there is low availability of parts, at least the people who ordered very early should have received them or at least be close to receiving them.

The fact that no one has points strongly to a paper launch (release with no availability). That in itself is fine as well. Just look at the console world - announcements are made with no promise of immediate availability; instead dates are set for a time when production units are available. Pre-orders are popular for high demand products and lots of people are willing to plunk down money to be among the first to get them - but they are advertised as pre-orders. Setting customer expectations.

Instead, the Dell sales representatives we spoke to made no indication that there were long lead times, much less parts shortages (or non-existent parts for that matter). The rep I spoke to even explicitly asked me if I was okay with Dell's 10-15 day estimate from the time or order to delivery. Oh would I ever be. Nothing like the actual 45-50 day lead times if the estimated ship dates are accurate (and would seem to be, considering you now do not expect to ship orders before the estimated date). Setting customer expectations.

Chalk it up to misinterpretation or whatever have you, but a complete about-face on this matter is painful, both for the person delivering the less-than-great news and for the customers. I believe much of the grief could have been avoided if only communications were better, right from the point of purchase. I know the reps are there to sell product, but promising one thing and delivering another is hardly the path to customer satisfaction. Tell us the truth, set the appropriate expectations and far fewer would be complaining.

This is pretty much a rehash of what I've written on my site as well (you can follow my name to that article if you wish). I believe John New at Dell has sent you my contact information already, but feel free to contact me anytime through the email I've provided with this comment.

Alot of people found out that when they called Dell to check their status, the automated service says that their order is "in production and is currently in the build stage". But when we check the order status online, it still says "in production". So I decided to call and actually speak to customer service to find out which one is true. The customer service representative told me that my order was "in production" but not in the "build stage" because a couple of items in my order were delayed or backordered, even though she wouldn't tell me which ones. When I asked why the automated service was telling me that it was in the build stage, even though I ordered on July 13th, she said she didn't know. It seems like alot of reps don't know what is going on. And everyone is getting agitated because of the lack of communication from Dell keeping us updated on why it is taking so long for people to receive their computers. You would think that ordering a laptop in the beginning of July would give you plenty of time to receive it before school starts, but apparently not. I know Dell is saying that there are shortages, it seems like on everything, but for people to start getting estimated ship dates in late August or early September is just ridiculous. I usually love Dell's service, but this is making me rethink future purchases from them.
Very well put, Charlie. Sad, still.

If there is going to be ANY delivery delays beyond the stated ship dates, may I suggest proactive concessions? I'd bet the majority of the placed orders are Dell loyalists (certainly me). And so far, they are tolerating these VERY long delays because of their loyalty to Dell. (And of course the 1330 itself being a killer machine). I'd bet if there were any further ship delays, Dell will loose MANY MANY thousands of dollars in orders AND really tick some (probably very loyal) customers off. It will destroy this loyalty well beyond repair. Can Dell afford this negative PR? The blogs will have a field day...

If get an e-mail or a call informing me of a further delivery delay, there darn well better also be some sort of concession - and NOT a token one. Or, I will cancel in a heartbeat and probably never come back to Dell for anything in the future.

For me it is a simple equation- I need my laptop by a certain date, I was told I would get it in time, that appears to be untrue, but at the same time I'm instructed to hold off and wait in case it changes. That's not really an acceptable proposition to me in the long run and I'm going to be forced to choose between a laptop I want badly (this one) and something that will get to me in time. I guess echoing what Elliott said... sigh.

And potential VERY bad PR for Dell.

I recently heard about this on slickdeals... (even more bad PR)...

"for those of you curious, you can stop calling all my sales reps and customer service reps wanting to know where your computer is. there is a global shortage on the glass used to make the lcds, as well as a delay on the video cards. couple this with the unit being a new production model and you have a 30 business day lead time. while we got a limited supply of chassis' and other items to ship out a portion of the systems, there is still a pretty short supply causing the delays. just because your order says 'in production' does not mean we are actually building it. just means the manifest has been sent over to manufacturing and your method of payment has been approved. calling and canceling to replace the system with the idea that it will ship is not the best choice, you will only delay your order longer...

finally, the reason i was passing along the friendly advice about not calling to cancel items and downgrade is because those are the orders we are starting to cancel. we have a full order report of every system that cleared through the drake page and are canceling for those that are attempting to take even further advantage of the drake page system by downgrading and changing specs. this goes for several other schools, but drake was impacted the most. i am sure a few folks that initially got in on the deal can verify that we have canceled their orders and some on multiple occassions.

just let your systems be, stop calling the queues to ask about them, and wait another 3 or 4 weeks and everyone will be a whole lot happier."

Looking at the clickcounts on notebookreview from the last couple of weeks... very very popular indeed.

Wow, this is all news to me. I had an INSP 5150 not 4 years old and the sound card has yet again blown up. (Dell said they would not replace it out of warranty time, cost =£298) ok fair enough. However dell was always good at next day fixing it so I thought I would go for another dell.
On the site the XPS m1330 was the system for me. So I phoned up and got sales and explained my grievance about the 5150 and asked for a discount on my new system, so from £1602.12 I haggled and got the system for £1475.00 so I thought cool I will take it.
It was when I looked on the site again to find that I could put the system together with the 2.4 t7700 I would get it for £1485.00 that’s list price! And they thought they were doing me a good deal with the 2.2 T7500.
So kind of discussed I didn’t place my order. So after being hounded by dell sales for a week and a half I still declined. Then a dell tech phoned me to see if I wanted to get my laptop fixed. I said no I was looking at a new system so he priced it up as I wanted and he came back with the fill List price as £1368.00 (less than the sales "best price" thinking I would just go ahead he said ok leave it with me till I get you a good deal and he came back with a stonker of a deal (BTW thanks mate).
so I went ahead sales then told me 10 working days it would be at my door I ordered the system on the 13th July its sitting at Pre Prep this is the 19th July and my est deliv is the 8/8. Looks like I might be in for a long wait!!! But it’s only right that its first come first served!

After reading all the comments here (and placing my order for an m1330 on July 13th), I'm extremely tempted to cancel my order.

I agree with everyone else who is frustrated and looking to other manufacturers for their next laptop.

Why should I wait a month for my order to be filled when I can go somewhere else and have a new laptop within a week!!?

This is beyond ridiculous and should not be happening from a company as large as Dell!

PATHETIC!

So... it's been almost a week, any news?

There is obviously an unevenness in order delays.  I finally moved into the build stage last night, having ordered the morning of the 26th.
Seven of my co -workers lost their orders because dell canceled them for excessive lead time.  They all ordered on the 29th.  I don't understand why dell would cancel, but dell contacted them to re-order with a delivery time of mid October (6 weeks shipping due to APO address) as opposed to mid September.  One other guy ordered on the 5th of July (if I remember correctly) and he's now bragging that he's in the boxing stage.  I read similar unevenness all over other forums.  This is not good practice.  If there are priority orders, people should KNOW as opposed to the secret splits.  This only causes people act like how we've all acted recently.  We do understand there should be priorities for those moving, deploying, going on vacation or whatnot.  There are those who could care less about the wait.

Because Dell will not ship USPS priority and only USPS Standard, it extends the ship time to 4-6 weeks instead of 1 week.  Some people mention that Dell does not ship USPS...they in fact do for APO addresses because that is the only service to deliver to them...call up a federal delivery rep if you don't believe me.   Dell reps have told me that only Standard shipping offers registered shipping (every hand has to sign in case stolen) where the USPS website lists that they do register priority as well...so Dell is just behind the times on this.  At least they offer orders to the military.  Thank you Dell.

My co-workers opted not to order the Dell and stick with what they have or order the local Japanese Sonys.  I finally opted to ship it to my parents and will be paying for priority out of there to get it here faster.  Dell, please fix this, that's twice I have to pay for shipping...over $180 I think.

In final words: I hate Gateway the most.  Have a great day.

Actually, Chris, it is worth noting that apparently Apple has been having some shortages of their LED displays on the macbook pros. Orders might take as much as say, 10 days now!

After all this talk around the M1330 I have a final conclusion. There is no XPS m1330 for us. Its clear this is only a concept, a prototype used by Dell to test the market. Its ridiculous, nobody received one by now. What they are trying to tell us?! that they don’t have parts to ship at least ONE m1330 by now, to ONE customer ONLY, anywhere in this world.  It’s a shame for Dell to do this on it's always loyal customers.

Regarding the last post by Lionel Menchaca ; when it gets to the point that I am now waiting to get news about how long I have to wait, it's probably time to call it quits.

I am further influenced by the post by Danb28, which reminded me of my old Optiplex SX270 which regularly used to give up the ghost, and was only salvageable by complete replacement of the motherboard (three times in two and a half years). I was only able to get this fantastic service because the Dell technicians used to help out beyond what they were actually oblgied to do. One of them told me that Dell computers were not built to last. Those of you who have had recurring difficulties after a year or so of ownership will know I'm not making this up.

Seeing the specs and design of the M1330, and the objectives of the Direct2Dell blog it seemed that Dell was beginning to be more responsive to their customers, but it's not happening is it.

I just spoke with Customer Care as when I tried to check my order status online this morning, I received an error.

Apparently, one part of the m1330 has gone End Of Life and all orders are being canceled and re-ordered.

I was not told what this EOL part was or what kind of shipping delay there would be, but that a new order number should be emailed later today.

That's the hell of a launch, right? Customers all over the place complaining about those delays. Apparently, the 1520 was also delayed a bit, but most customers received it much sooner than the estimated shipping date.

But still, I think there is a communication problem more than anything else here... I mean if the XPS orders were called "pre-order the XPS 1330, delivery end of July", I'm quite sure must customers would just not complain. If it was too long, they would just not order. Instead I imagine that Dell was confident in shipping the 1330 in time. As it's not shipped anywhere on the planet (or almost), it can't be just a problem in one factory, it's a major shortage on a critical part. I studied industrial engineering, I understand that Dell tries to work in "just in time" to avoid stocks,  that a launch means slower manufacturing rate, but still... There should have been some stocks on components before selling it. Or longer delays! That's a security to avoid this mess. Maybe longer delay will stop some customers from purchase, but what do you prefer? To make thousands of customers quite mad and giving very nice comments about Dell to all their friends, or just loose a few customers and make all the others quite happy because you shipped a bit earlier than the very long estimated delay?

Personnally, I would go for solution #2. And if solution #1 is what is happening, I would try to have a better corporate communication about this. I read thousands of posts on various forums, and honestly, I heard about every single component of this laptop being on shortage. Screen, case, hard drive, processor, GPU, etc... etc... If it was the case, some systems would be late, but some would be shipping. So people don't trust this anymore, and it hurts even more the image of Dell I think: bad launching with big delays, then bad communication. I'm a long time customer (my first laptop was a Dell), I'm buying almost only Dell hardwares for my company and so far had a very pleasant experience with Dell (good prices, good sales rep, excellent support), but this experience is very very unusual... Dell is trying to reach the top spot again from HP, but it won't help for sure. Too bad, the laptop itself is exciting, but what a mess all around. I'm still keeping my order (2 weeks already in pre-production... sigh...), but I will need it for my vacations. I would not like to cancel it, but Asus may win a new customer if my 1330 is not shipped quickly. That will not change my positive opinion about Dell for corporate customers, but for individuals, I really don't know...

I wonder if the m1330 leak that was posted on Engadget (and word spread like wildfire) forced Dell to 'release' the m1330 before it was really ready for prime time?

No matter, it WAS released, so now it's time to put up - certainly NOT shut up (or is this what this lack of info is)??

And, Dell, please note my concessions post above. You have some 'irritated' people now.... and if there are further shipping date glitches, that irritation changes to very angry and VERY PUBLIC anger quickly.

I ordered my M1330 on June 27th through my college, and my ship date was July 27th.  I recently checked my order status, and my ship date has been moved back to August 15th, so I wouldn't recieve it until August 20th.  Well, school starts the 15th, so that won't work.  My original ship date would have left me time to recieve my laptop in plenty of time before school started.  why the set back?

Well, I ordered my M1330 not too long ago and today, when I checked the order status, it was cancelled. The Dell customer service rep that I spoke too, although very pleasant, had no idea what was going on. Now I'm wondering if I will ever get this product.

I ordered a laptop on 7/7 and have still have not received it. My husband orders a comperable from Costco and got it in 5 days.

Dell has no information about when it will be delivered, but I have gotten several emails that push the delivery date out more and more. Their customer service agents are no help whatsoever.

I wish I had seen this board before I ordered, I would have NEVER placed an order with Dell.

Michael said:

I orderd mine back on July 5th and was given an estimated shipdate of 8/24 but when speaking with the rep they said this was just Dell's practice of giving excessive delivery estimates "just in case" but i should expect the laptop well before my date.  Well...i'm not now.

However, my while checking my order status all i can see is "in production" which could mean anything from payment cleared to testing phase.  How can i find out more specifically what stage my laptop is in??? (i.e. build, test, etc...)

So just like everyone else, I've had my own horror story with Dell and ordering the m1330. It took me over 3 hours to even order my laptops ordered but my huge complaint is everything that has happened after that. I actually wrote an email to corporate after one of their corporate service team members accused me of lying. I have a copy of the email on digg and hopefully we can use this to show how Dell's customer support and treats its customers. So everyone please read:

Regarding customer service, the rep i spoke with was very pleasent and patient while i placed the order.  After finalizing it she told me an email woudl be sent to confirm the details.  Well, it was sent and i noticed that instead of the 9 cell battery.  As per her instructions (to email her with any changes), i sent TWO emails and no response.  Finally I called up and spoke w/ a different rep and she offered to change it but telling me it was basically cancelling the previous order and creating a new order, causing a later ship date.  I decided against and keeping the 6 cell, but i have to agree with many of you, the cust service dept is slipping on this one.  I have had nothing but positive experience to date with them, they must really be getting overloaded with problems regarding the m1330.

Hey, I know I'm being pushy, but I'd really be grateful if we could get that update sometime sooner than later... any news?
John said:

I've been posting updates on my site which you can reach per digg. Apparently Michael Dell read the email (or so it was told to me) since a really friendly person at corporate called me this Sunday morning tossing me out of bed (that I have no problems with, heck if they want to call me at two in the mornin to say its on its way I'm down with it).

 http://digg.com/hardware/Dell_and_how_it_treats_its_customers

Quick update is twofold, some parts are backordered and apparently the engineers stopped production to reengineer something. Atleast thats what I was told after that phone call. The rep was also a fantastic representation of what Dell customer service should be. So Lionel, please pass on my praise for that rep and make sure he starts training India for you guys. ;)

I am so frustrated with Dell too. Not only have I purchased my last three computers from them, but also own their stock. But after this experience, I am thinking about Sony for my business again.

This sucks! I placed my order on July 10 & received a September 6th delivery date! It makes no sense. When I call customer service, they all say that the date is greatly exaggerated but won't promise anything more. When I tell them what I have been reading, it clearly doesn't fit their "script" & they can't respond intelligently. Michael, come on & tell a very loyal customer & stockholder (albeit only a few shares) the truth!

Joseph said:

UPDATE:

I finally spoke to a case manager at Dell regarding my M1330 order. He told me the "facts" & it makes sense:

1. No M1330 has been shipped yet (as of today) with the LED screen option

2. By law, they need to contact their customers if orders don't ship within 30 days & must have their permission to extend it or they will have to cancel the order.

3. He also indicated a couple small parts that include a hinge & arm rest were on back order as well as the LED screen. But the LED is the real issue.

4. He upgraded my order to next day delivery when it is ready to ship.

5. He told me to call his direct line anytime for further updates.

Now that is the type of service we want from Dell. I am sick & tired of the reps from India reading the same crap that I can read online myself. Thanks Dan for the honest answers. I will now await patiently for my order & look forward to this awesome machine!!

Thanks for your update Joseph!  Curiously, when did you place your order and what expected date did they give you?  I'm only asking b/c for those of us when we ordered the extremely long lead time was given, can we get the expedited shipping?

Joseph said:
Michael, I ordered online on July 10. They still won't commit to a firm delivery date but expect it to be ready before the August 30th date showing. If you call customer service for an update on your order & ask them to upgrade your shipping, they will do so with pleasure. They know that many of us are none to happy about this situation.

Dell's gesture of generousity?

On the morning of 7/26, I contemplated on ordering the legendary M1330 which I have heard so much about via CNET and other computer fanatical media outlets. After tens of hours of researching the best computer for me when I start my first year off at college this fall, I finally decided that the M1330 was the best choice for me.

I did however not purchase the M1330 on the morning 7/26. I waited six more hours into the afternoon of 7/26 and decided it was prime time for me to order this legendary piece of 21st century technology.

It was not until then did I notice that Dell generously offered a FREE Timbuk 2 Messenger Bag - Black ($149 value) combined with my order of a 2.0ghz duo core, 1gb RAM (upgrade it myself for cheaper), 128mb Graphics, crimson Red, 120gb 5400rpm hard drive, LED screen, biometrics, etc.

Previously, on the morning of 7/26, I did not notice Dell offering this spectacular deal to me, a free stylish laptop carrying bag designed specifically for 14" laptops! Good thing I did not order my M1330 six hrs earlier for I could not have benefited from this free carrying case graciously offered by DELL.

Did anyone else get this laptop carrying case deal?

I ordered a dell 1750 laptop on the 5th of July 2007 and subsequently received an estimated delivery date of on or BEFORE the 31st July.
Having watched the order carefully, I began to get concerned with the status of the order on the 26th July as the order had still not got past the preproduction stage. So I decided to ring Dell who sent me away with no further information.
The next day I received an E-mail to tell me that my order was now due to arrive on the 6th September - 37 days after my original delivery date.  I, as you can imagine, was furious and so I rang Dell again and was told "Its because it was a very popular choice...".
I wasn't going to be messed about like that and told them to cancel my order.I just hope that they can do something right and cancel my order without taking money from me: I am concerned.

DON'T BUY FROM THEM.

ordered a m1330 on June 30 for my sister. estimated shipping date aug. 17.

i got a $150 coupon via email on july 28 that i tried and (successfully) applied to a m1330 order and i called Dell saying i wanted to apply this coupon to my seriously delayed order that they probably didn't even start making yet. I was denied saying it can only be used on future purchases. it's not like I got my laptop already and want to apply a coupon to an old purchase i made.... they're still waiting for parts for my laptop....

I explained i could cancel and reorder and get the $150 discount with the free messenger bag but I didn't want to wait an additional 1 month for my laptop. All i wanted was to keep my place in line as it is now, but apply my coupon to the purchase price... i asked to speak to a case manager but they said they were in a meeting. I asked if there was an extension or direct line i can reach a case manager at. He said no there isn't, but i can reply to his email someone will get in touch with me.

I guess no one has the power at Dell to apply a coupon to a current pending order? i cancelled my order even though I waited over 1 month and planned to reorder it with the coupon code. Yes this laptop is for my sister, if it were for me I would have cancelled LONG ago and gone with one of Dell's competitors.

well anyways, I waited two days for a call from a case manager and didn't want to wait longer because the coupon would expire in another two days. I called them again to verify the coupon code i had and they said it expired july 30, (i got the email with coupon july 28). The email clearly said Aug. 3 but they said nope july 30. So great... i waited 1 month already for a laptop, get told i can't apply a coupon to a laptop i have on order that's pending, finally cancel my order to start over my order with the coupon, and then find out that my coupon Dell sent me was a lie cause it expired 4 days premature.

was I asking too much of Dell when i asked to apply my $150 coupon to my current order? it's been really frustrating, having to speak to 4 different Dell reps and all.

not that it matters but i won't be recommending Dell to anyone i know.... would have been so much easier walking into Fry's or Best Buy and picking one up....

Just found this site and must say that I am also unimpressed. I started a Dell chat with a sales rep prior to ordering the m1330 and was told it was an 18 - 21 day wait for delivery. As I am leaving for Europe in mid-Sept. on business I thought this was a reasonable ship time and went ahead and placed an order.

Low and behold.... when I got the order confirmation it gave me a ship date of  Sept. 14 : almost double the wait I had been quoted by the Dell sales agent. I was not happy so I gave Dell a call. After being transferred around to 3 different departments I was basically told too bad. Cancel the order if you have to.

Not amused..... anyone reading this should think hard about how much they want this thing and when they actually need it. I am seriously thinking Sony now as I have already made a commitment to sell my current laptop  and need a replacement by the end of August. Too bad because the 1330 looks awesom.... but as far as I am concerned it is pretty much vapor wear at this time.
