More on the XPS M1330

If you're interested in this product, bet you've already seen the design-focused blog entry and vlog on the XPS M1330. A few performance-related things that this sub-4 pound notebook supports are:

  • Intel Core 2 Duo processors up to 2.4GHz
  • An optional 32GB SSD drive
  • Regular hard drive capacities up to 250GB
  • HDMI, Firewire, USB ports
  • Optional for NVIDIA's GeForce Go 8400M GS discrete graphics card with 128MB.

In this vlog, Matt Jorgensen provides a good overview of the features that the XPS M1330 offers.

XPS 720 what TV TUNER  is there room for an  internal ,or if not  is there an External available.

Lydia: There's plenty of room for an internal tuner. There's lots of options... Here's a TV tuner card search from our Electronics & Accessories site.

I personally run a VBOX 150 HDTV tuner in my XPS 700 and over-the-air HD content looks pristine. If you're going to record HD though, you need some hard drive space... in my experience, a 1-hr HD program takes about 6 - 7GB.

Kudos to Dell for this laptop.  It seems to be one of the better consumer laptops offered by Dell.  Lets work on getting the price of the Solid State drive down.  $600 to add that on is far too high for consumers, and not necessarily a good decision for businesses.

Can something like this laptop be expected in the Latitude line in the near future?

Lionel Menchaca, Chief Blogger said:

Craig: Awesome.... glad you like the M1330 design. Can't talk about any future Latitude roadmap details at this point, but will blog about any new developments.

To your comment about SSD drives, you're right. They're still expensive. Like a lot of new technologies, it will take time for the prices to come down. The first step in that process though is to make them available on more systems, and we're trying to do that. If our competition does the same, that will also help bring prices down.

SSD drives are a technology I'm interested in as well. I'll try to include more details about them in future posts.

I have a question about the built-in camera. Why is it that the LED display camera is only 0.3 megapixels when the LCD display comes exuipped with a 2.0 megapixel camera. Seems like quite a bit of difference.
Lionel Menchaca, Chief Blogger said:

Eric: Jayayess1190 is right on the mark with his comment. The LED screen is thinner. That's why we could only fit a VGA resolution camera in there.

In addition to being thinner, the LED screen is brighter and it's more energy-efficient. It also costs a bit more ($150 premium) and like you mentioned, only accommodates a VGA camera.

It really boils down to what's more important to you.

Having seen both side-by-side, my personal opinion is that it's hard to pass up the LED display. :)

Above, it states: "Intel Core 2 Duo processors up to 2.4GHz"  When will the T7700 be available. Currently, the max is the T7500 (2.2G). I WANT this machine and I will order, but I want the T7700.

One would think that gigE would be the norm nowadays. When/will gigE NIC be available??

I would order an m1330 immediatly, but for the above.

They can't fit a 2 mega pixel camera in the LED screen. It fits in the LCD display because it is thicker.

Hi Lionel,

I was wondering if you could provide insight on this.  I would like to inquire about which specific Dell Truemobile bluetooth module the XPS m1330 shipped with.  I have spoken to XPS chat all day and have received various answers, ranging from unreasonable to reasonable.  Please provide a solid answer if possible.

Thanks!

Hi,

I agree with RichardN's comments above.  You have created a beautiful combination of form and function, and I would be sending you money right now, if it weren't for:

10/100 Network????

This is the achilles heel of the m1330, and I can't put this into my network.

Can you please tell us when 10/100/1000 will be available?

Thank you, Dell ROCKS!

I also would like a clarification on the T7700 (2.4G) question.

If/when will this CPU be available in the 1330??

Drew said:

Hey, I just ordered an xps m1330 yesterday, but I still haven't recieved my "order confirm" email with my order number etc. I am going abroad at the end of July. Will I be able to get my system by then? Thanks!

I was hoping that someone from Dell actually reads these posts - and answers them. I guess not? It's been 2 days with no response.

1. T7700??? (2.4G CPU)

2. Gig Ethernet NIC.

When/if on both??

... and, just found out that the m1330 doesn't have Firewire 800?

Dell, please -- complete the m1330.  Give it Gigabit and Firewire 800.

 Please.

And let me know when you do, so I can send you money.

Thank you!

Mike

I'm thinking of getting a m1330 to drive a 1080p projector through the hdmi port.  Does the m1330 generate 1080p resolution?  Will the windows desktop resize to 1080x1920 on the projector when connected?

Jon said:

I have three things I would like clarified.

1. 250 GB hard drive?!?  I've searched the home, home office, and small business sections and the largest drive option is 200GB not 250 GB.  Also, the online configurations on all sections doesn't have an SSD option.  Where is it?

2. Secondly, why is it that on rare times I've configured a system, there's a Biometric Sensor option for $25 more.  But most of the time I try to build my own system, that option isn't there?  Is it left out?  Or is it included on all models?  What's the deal with this option popping up?

3. Lastly, why is it that small business is the ONLY section that has the m1330 with the 2.4 GHz processor with the 8000 FSB?

Thanks.

I am looking at a few of these for staff in our creative agency who are after grunt in a lightweight and stylish chassis.  It can't be bought with XP which is annoying as we are not deploying Vista in our business yet.  I could wipe them and install XP no problem but am worried about driver issues.  Anyone have any detail on this?  I would want to be able to use the Webcam under XP.
MichaelGurevich said:

Alex, yes, I also share the same thoughts.  I would be using XP also, and it hasnt even occurred that drivers might not be available.

But youre right!  They might not be!

Dell, we've accummulated a bunch of questions in this thread, can you please answer them?

 Thank you,

Mike

I have a program that needs this minimum requirements: "100% DirectX® 9.0c-100% DirectX® 9.0c-compliant 64MB video card and drivers (NVIDIA® GeForce® 4 Ti 4200 + / ATI® Radeon® 8500 +)"

The M1330 comes with a "128MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 8400M GS"

Does anyone know if I will be able to run my Audio/Video/Graphics program on this laptop?

Dell is screwing us bad.  Period.  And you better publish this comment, because you know I'm not just trolling around here.  My real email address is in my comment header.  Contact me if you wish to discuss.

First, Dell is purposely and artificially withholding the availability of the 2.4GHz T7700 CPU.  There is NO reason whatsoever that it should not be available right now on the Canadian website.  I can get the T7700 CPU in the M1330 on the US site (dell.com) but not on dell.ca.  I can also get the T7700 in the D630 on both the Canadian and American sites.  So why not in the M1330?  Or at least, why don't you tell us if it's a radio emissions or heating problem that CSA won't approve?  Tell us if you're only allowed to sell laptops that start fires in the USA.  Speculation, I admit, and I'm wrong no doubt.  So SELL me the CPU!

Second, you're ripping us off on the price of the same part.  There's only one T7700.  Just one.  Yet, with a D630 on the US site, the upgrade from the T7500 to T7700 is $290.  For the same upgrade, from T7500 to T7700 in the M1330, the cost is $400.  Why is there a $110 difference?  Is it a different motherboard?  Or does Dell get special T7700+ XPS SUPER AWSOME editions from Intel?  BS.  You're ripping us off for the same part because of the XPS logo.  If you're not, EXPLAIN it on the site, so it doesn't look like a scam.

Third.  The whole separation of your business and home sites is annoying and is clearly just a difference of how much crap "demo" software you put on the box by default.  And the artificially limited parts....the M1330 can only go to T7500 on the US Home site?  But those savvy business users who need to run Excel faster get to have 2.4GHz T7700s?  What are you thinking!?  The XPS line is a GAMING line!  Now for top end parts the gamers have to buy from the business site where financing options aren't even the same?

 Your courses of action:

A) Fire your marketing department.

B) Hire me for a day so I can slap some sense into the people that are left. (I'll do it for free)

C) Sell me a Del XPS M1330 with a 2.4GHz T7700 CPU for a fair price from your Canadian site.

Stop the BS games and sell some damn hardware.

And they say Canadians are nice.

Angry,
Clinton Begin

Thank you Dell. I finally got an answer and will share it here to assist the others with the question:

"The issue with the 1330 and the 7700 is that the 1330's power supply (65W) is not sufficient to properly run the 7700 - we are potentially looking to offer a 90W in a few months that will enable us to run higher end processors.  As for it being available in the US SMB site - that is an error - thank you for pointing it out.  Orders that are placed for that system will drop out and not be built - the US will be contacting any of those customers." ~Chris Kidd, Regional Sales Manager, Dell Canada

I'm glad this is now explained, if not resolved.  It was simply a chain of website and marketing errors that made it look very confusing and questionable to me.

Dell has explained the issue to my satisfaction, and I may still buy the 2.2.  Knowing that it's a simple technical limitation makes me feel better than thinking I'm being blocked from fairly purchasing a product for marketing reasons.

Cheers,  :)

Spoke too soon.  Dell's incompetence is impossible to articulate.

My order was in the mail.  They had my interest, my patience and my credit card number....and they still failed to sell me a computer.

I'm off to Apple's site.

Hi Clinton,

I too am interested in ordering a m1330 with T7700 but looks like the only place that is presently available is Dell Canada. Here is the link - http://configure.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=ca&CS=cadhs1&l=en&OC=N13302V_R_E

and

http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsnb_m1330?c=ca&cs=cadhs1&l=en&s=dhs

I am based out of Switzerland and I have chatted with atleast ten dell sales folks from all over the place (US, Canada, UK, Switzerland). None of them have a clue and are extremely rude (interested in selling without any help to the end client).

As regards the email you have quoted in your post dated 11th July by Chris Kidd, Regional Sales Manager, Dell Canada - it appears to be false.

Dell Canada continues to promote this T7700 processor and Dell Canada Sales guys have confirmed taking orders without any knowledge that this is a mistake.

This section is called gaming, i am a bit confused though since the M1330 is not a gaming laptop. Please Dell - equip the XPS M1330 with a 8600M-GT 256MB , you know everyone wants that in an ultraportable. the 8600M GT scored almost 200% better than the 8400M GS in 3D Mark06 !
Lionel Menchaca, Chief Blogger said:

Christian: Thanks for the comment. My mistake on tagging this as Gaming—I didn't mean to do that.

Thanks for the feedback on the graphics card. Nothing to talk about now, but if that changes, I'll blog about it on Direct2Dell.

I ordered a black M1330 with the 9cell battery. GUESS WHAT IT WOBBLES ON A FLAT SURFACE.  The base is higher in one corner...probably due to the battery.  Upon closer inspection, the aluminum hand rest was warped on the bottom left corner and the top and bottom along the mousepad.

I'm not impressed with DELL's quality control

things missing on this laptop

2. PCMCIA

3. Better graphic card

Does anyone know where we can find the latest video and SSD drivers for Windows XP? I found the 163.44 but it seems to eat up a lot of processing time. As well I found an SSD driver but it seems to lock out the box on heavy I/O processing...

For those of you who want to install XP on the M1330 and are worried about drivers, there are few problems.  I just did it and found all of the drivers on the Dell site - go to support, choose your system using the drop down menu arrays  when it comes to operating system, specify XP.  You will find drivers arranged under logical groupings.  The only thing that doesn't work is the Media Direct - that is tied to Vista.  The only thing I had to do was to find a program to play DVDs.  The Roxio program that came with the machine works fine.

The only real problem I had occurred when I connected a firewire external drive to the firewire port.  The firewire driver corrupted two NTFS partitions on the hard drive but recognized and preserved the FAT32 partition.  I don't know if this was a problem with the XP diver or would also occur under Vista.  My solution was to create all FAT32 partitions on the drive.

I just got my wife the m1330 last week, and downgraded it to XP for her work.  I am unable to find a compatible XP video driver.  I've tried the one on Dell's site and also the one from video2go, but no luck.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I am unable to find the correct video driver either and it is driving me crazy. The dell support says it is a Vista only laptop to make me feel better.

Please help if you can,

Thank you

ANY HELP?PLEASSEEE

If you're looking for the video drivers for the Intel GM965 chipset for WinXP, download the package for the Vostro 1400 laptop for WinXP.  They work perfectly on the XPS M1330.

Can't help you with the nVidia drivers, but it looks like they suply one on the Downloads and Drivers page for the M1330, if you change the OS to Windows XP.
