XPS M1330: A Sign of Things to Come

Several of you have already seen the stories in Engadget, but now I can share all the details of our XPS M1330. As many of you know, I've been here at Dell for a long time. Having seen my share of products (and product launches), it's been a long time since I've seen the kind of internal excitement we're seeing so far with the XPS M1330. Typically, I'm a desktop guy, and I definitely want one of these.

What's the reason for the excitement? The thin and light design. It's less than an inch thick and packs a lot of performance inside. It's based on Intel's Santa Rosa chipset and is our first notebook that features an optional 13.3-inch WXGA (1280x800) LED backlight display, which is notable for two reasons:

  • it's brighter than a typical LCD display
  • it allows for an even thinner profile compared to its LCD counterpart

The XPS M1330 comes in three finishes: Tuxedo Black, Crimson Red and Pearl White. And these aren't your average paint jobs—the Pearl White color, for example, is made up of seven layers of paint. Other nice touches: touch-sensitive media buttons across the top, an integrated remote that fits in the ExpressCard slot, a full-size keyboard, aluminum palmrests, a standard webcam (2.0 megapixel with the LCD display, VGA resolution with the thinner LED display) dual digital microphones and noise isolation earbuds, an optional biometric reader, dual headphone jacks and an 8-in-1 card reader right in the front of the notebook.

In this vlog, I talked to Vio Luminosu, the lead industrial desginer for the product. Before the M1330, he was the lead designer on our XPS 2010. Many of the design elements he's proud of first appeared in the XPS M2010 and have made it into the M1330. One thing that the new notebook brings with it is a lower price of entry—the XPS M1330 starts at $1,299.

I'm scared..... Is this the end of my Dell hunger strike? Am I going back to Dell?

I'm not sure whether this is the right place to ask this, but would any of the techie Dell people know if:

1. the 8400GS supports dual-link DVI (according to nVidia it does, but I wonder if it's something that has to be enabled)
2. if we were to get a Dell 30" LCD and use a HDMI-dual-link-DVI adapter, would it be able to drive it at native 2560x1600?

If that would work, guys, you just one-upped everyone, and big props over that. If not... well, at least it has HDMI. :)

jB: Thanks for the question. Unfortunately, the 8400GS doesn't support the 30" at 2560x1600.

The maximum resolution is 1920 x 1200, which means it will drive the new 2407WFP-HC monitor at native resolution though.

Hi Lionel,

I was wondering if you could provide insight on this.  I would like to inquire about which specific Dell Truemobile bluetooth module the XPS m1330 shipped with.  I have spoken to XPS chat all day and have received various answers, ranging from unreasonable to reasonable.  Please provide a solid answer if possible.

Thanks!

Can the m1330 drive dual external monitors?  Like 2 Dell 20.1" LCDs?
Hey cool it's got a nice wedge shape.  I can use it to hold open my office door.

2 Things:

1. Why does the m1330 only offer the 8400M GS and not the 8600M GT?

2. Why is Vista Ultimate and 200gb 7200rpm hard drive not an option on the 1520?

Brian said:

I am having difficulty deciding between an Inspiron and an M1330.

Why would you offer Blu-Ray on the inspiron line with no HDMI or DVI out, but offer HDMI for the XPS without Blu-Ray? Regardless, I realize HDMI is still greatly beneficial without Blu-Ray, and remains a huge selling point for me.

With the slot dvd design, will it be possible to upgrade to Blu-Ray in the future with HDCP compatibility?

Also, it seems that the standard sound hardware for the XPS is integrated 2.0 Audio. Does this mean that the HDMI port will only be capable of outputting stereo sound? I really want this XPS, but with stereo sound in a performance laptop, I'm not so sure.

how long before we see hybrid drives in the xps line?  Samsung and some others recently announced hybrid drives (part flash, part hard drive).  Might we see that on the 1330 soon?

This laptop has almost everything Im after with regards to specs and aesthetics with a few exceptions.

Screen resolution is too low - the option of a higher res screen for those of us who use photoshop would be nice.

VGA - DVI would be a more fitting choice for such a premium product.

Turbo memory - is there an option for this? Ive seen some laptops available with 1gb of turbo memory.

Its not a tablet pc...ok thats like critacising a bike because its not a car. Seriously though, re-design the chassis to accept a rotating hing and you would have the sexiest and possibly one of the most well speced convertibles on the market!

Aside fromt that it looks  like a great laptop hopefully the design will filter through into its bigger brothers in the XPS lineup.

Do You Plan on Offering a 8400GT at least on this?

2 things.....

1. When the 1330 was 'leaked'', it was said it would be available with the T7700 (2.4G). The max currently available is the T7500 (2.2G). If/when will the T7700 be available - I REALLY want one

2. 10/100 NIC???? I thought this machine was going to have gigE??

This actually has little to do with the specific post above but some feedback I felt needed to be shared with Dell in this open forum as a company who values communication with the consumer.

You desperately need to reevaluate your student pricing policy.  I am a student (obviously) who is in need of a new laptop.  I am a long time Dell customer and had been leaning towards the smallest XPS and then firmly in the camp to purchase following the newest release with the 13.3", not only one computer, but two (one for my sister who is beginning her freshman year next fall).  However, I am unable to get a student discount for that computer and customize it.  Your customer service reps where highly unhelpful and essentially told me I was out of luck, while acting disconnected the entire time.

Congratulations Dell, you've taken a long time customer and destroyed his brand loyalty.  So you can say goodbye to my $6,000 in revenue and can be sure this will be broadcast all over the blogosphere.  I'm going to go buy an HP now, who will actually give me the student discount I want.

Why is eSATA being ignored? With this machine being so capable, and with the optional TV tuner, external storage is a must, but why use the slower USB when eSATA has proven to deliver a vastly more robust speed envelope? I understand I can just buy a ExpressCard eSATA card, but theres only ONE slot, and being that most mobos currently offer eSATA on board, it just makes sense to have it built in. Please consider in a future revision!!!

Thanks Lionel and Vio,

It's been a long time since I was drooling over a Dell. This is really a new standard in industrial design for Dell and you've kept the price competitive.

I'm placing an order for a m1330 shortly and I am helping spread the buzz.

Looking forward to solid state hard drive, GPU upgrade and Blue Ray in future models but this is the right time, and the right laptop for me now.

OK, I fell for it and bought one.

Why is the ship date 2 months away?  This should be listed as not yet available or coming soon, or at least let the buyer know the estimated ship date while configuring the product.  I now have to find another solution and cancel this, or find a stop gap for two months.

Juan said:
They told me that it would only take eight days... Is it ture that I´ll have to wait such a long time???
Damian said:

I agree with DJR...and Juan 8 days?? I will take that right now..after much research between Sony, the tough books, and Dell....with me heavily leaning towards the Sony until I sumbled on the 1330....I configured each machine, priced them again and again....and the Dell delivered the performance and the looks....I thought what a winner...so I finally broke down and bought my first dell...Expecting it to be here within the week or so....and since I had just won a major multi million dollar contract what could be more fitting to have the latest machine to work on.....like a kid waiting for Christmas day.....imagine my dissappointment when the ship date was not until the end of August....2 months away...

calls to customer service well lets just say they were very nice and appologetic but offered NO real assistance or explainations and I was transfered at least 5 times.  I felt like I spoke with half of india.ok maybe a few less than half a billion..they just do not get it ...no one could say well we dont have the parts...they did say it it was my credit issue....checked there no problems everything was fine..sounded like the finace group was in good ole USA and yes she was helpful and promised she would do what she could to see about expediting....alas that has not come to pass..no one could even venture a guess about a ship date...one person said I could get over night delivery....not much help on a 2 month delay before it is shipped.

I sit here patiently and am seriously considering going back and ordering the Sony SZ premiums....but am torn...do I wait or do cancel and order.....it sucks.I    must check my account 10 times a day to see if somehow the status has magically changed......I have put off buying a notebook for 2 years.....and I could easly afford a new one but the old sony viao kept chugging along....ok its not as fast any more and it is time for a new machine.  DELL you have designed a winner here it really is in looks and performance but hell if I can not get one what good is it??????  Thanks for letting me bitch...I have yet to make up my mind on this.

woohooooooo today Dell delivered the ExpressCard SSD.....can the 1330 be far behind....ummmmmmm nope still the end of August....I will probably lose the card before I ever get a chance to use it.

Damian

Damian said:

ok so whats the word on a real delivery date.....I agree you have a winner.....and you got us all excited....so no what we order and wait 2 months.....rethinking that

Tom said:

The lead time is apparently with the built-in cameras. I didn't get an answer if removing the camera from my spec would significantly change the ship date.

Damian said:

It would be nice to hear something....if eliminating the camera would speed up delivery I would consider it at this point though no one is able to say why the delay....is there a component in particular?  I wish some one could come up with an answer....I know I am not the only one that feels this way.  Does anyone from Dell actually  read this?  Michael Dell you out there?  fine maybe I will order an ATG instead..or the Sony..I am afraid to call again it will just lead to more frustration and a million appologies....with no real answer.  The disclaimer below says comments related to a specific product will be addressed separately rather than posted here.....so when is some one going to address my calls? or emails?

The M1330 comes with a "128MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 8400M GS"

Does anyone know if I will be able to run my Audio/Video/Graphics program on this laptop?

Okay, after salivating over the m1330 for the past week or so & trying to negotiate a 15% discount with a live representative; I broke down & ordered it last night. But I agree that the ship dates sucks! The rep kept telling me it would ship in one or two weeks, but he clearly didn't have a clue. My order is estimating delivery after LABOR DAY!! It's a good thing my dell 710m is working perfectly (albeit a bit slow)!

Dell, just tell your customers the truth!!

For those who obviously do not understand the Dell model - they continue to primarily be a build to order company.  From insiders I learned that the sales of the 1330 have exceed expectations by a factor of 5X - a phenonmenal launch for them.  I too was disappointed with a late August delivery on my shipment - but it will be worth the wait.

For those of you who bought the machine now, you got shafted. You guys should have waited for intel is planning to release a new chip code name penryn anytime soon until next year. The preformance of this chip is signifcantly better. Just do some research. You can't beat the 3+ ghz clock speed.

Ordered this on 3rd July, got an Estimated delivery date of 20thJuly GREAT!

One week later I was called to say I now have to wait till 8th August. :-(

Whats going on?

I must have been one of the 1st in the UK to buy one and I seem to be getting really bad delivery estimates.

Apparently there are a few shortages in parts, but thats no excuse, Dell have had 20 or so days to get the new parts in and they should have been prepared for the launch. Consequently, I have been in Pre-production for the 21 days!

Im not very happy and although dell systems I have bought in the past have been great and shipped quickly, this might be the last time I buy from them. (If i dont cancel this one 1st)

Seriously, its really not fair having to wait 5-6 weeks for this. I took my inspiron apart the give it a clean and didnt take more then 1 hour to put back together properly, never minr 5 weeks.

I ordered a M1330 on july and it arrived last week. Beautiful and promising but with some issues:

  1. The finger scan wasn't there. Obviously a miss.
  2. The 9-cell battery is an absolute disgrace, it extrudes from the frame of the computer. I'd never have ordered such a lame component if this detail had been mentioned from DELL website.
  3. The screen is bright but so glossy you can use it as a mirror - even when the computer is on... An option for a matte screen would have been great.

By "chance", point #1 allowed me to complain and get a replacement - with a 6-cell battery. It will take another month but I can keep the computer I received until I have the new one. Apparently, DELL has some issues with the biometric device.

At the price they are selling for and incredible popularity, inevitably means there will be a couple of rotten ones and delays generally.  I would rather wait 6-7weeks for a well built laptop then 1 week for one that breaks down all the time

Hi

I seem to be having a strange issue with my M1330: The keyboard squeals. It's not the high pitch noise as described by many but the keyboard itself. For example, If I press the 'A' key it sounded as if there is a friction in the spring/plastic below the keyboard surface. If I press it slowly the screeching is there until the key reached its bottom, and screeches again when the key is realeased. There was no noise when new but after only 2 weeks the more commonly used keys starting making this noise and now more and more keys are showing this behaviour.

I do not think this is normal. A well aged D600 did not have this problem. If you count how many 'A's and 'E's and 'N's (plus some other) in this post then that's how many times it has annoyed me in the past 5minutes...

Any idea?

Thanks.

Can the headphone jack be configured to output a digital audio signal that can be then fed into a 5.1 surround system? (For Dolbly Digital and DTS 5.1 sound from movies and DVDs)

I am looking to use the laptop in a HD movie player role

Cheers, Mike

Hello,

I received my system several weeks ago and I love it except for the high pitch noise (whine) squeal that comes out of it. Really i can't explain how much it is frustrating.

I have 2 types of high pitch noises that comes out of my notebook. the first one i hear on and off when I'm just using my notebook. no specific application. you can hear it well in a quite room and other people have commented before "is that noise coming out of your notebook". the second noise is even more annoying. when i have the ac cord plugged in and the notebook closed (sleep or shut down) its so load that in class people would stare on my notebook. i have to take out the ac cord each time, or i would have to take the battery out.

I called Dell countless times and finally they agreed to send me a replacement. after receiving the replacement 2 weeks ago..guess what... same exact problem. i called Dell again and they explained to me that this problem is the fault of the Processor and they will be sending an update soon. I installed the bios update a few weeks ago and i still have that problem. what can i do, what should i do?

I really hope Dell's senior tech team is aware of this and fix it. I spent so much money and some time time on the phone. what do i need to do next? Is Dell aware of this problem?

Help....

Hi,

I bought DELL XPS M1330 from United Arab Emirates and I have a question. Does the warranty becomes void if I decided to go for dual boot with Vista and Ubuntu? I assume warranty is on hardware parts alone, not the software.

I recently purchased an xpx m1330 and a 24" Dell 2407 Monitor.  After a few days of use, I noticed a pretty dramatic flicker on the external monitor that I have setup indualview. 1920 x 1200 res on the external.   I upgraded the Nvidia drivers, but the flicker remained.  I finally solved the problem with a HDMI to DVI-D cable and tossed the VGA cable.

The difference in quality is amazing and well worth the $15 dedicated cable. You an buy an HDMI-DVI adapter as well, but be careful if you purchase an adapter as you could lose access to your USB port.

I just started using a Dell XPS M 1330 but the "H key" on the keyboard doesn't seem to work very well--I have to strike it directly in the center, whereas all the other keys work with off-center side pressure.  Is anyone else having this problem?

hmmm, I've had my 1330 for two weeks now, and I love it! It is everything I want in a notebook.  However, a few things I need to have sorted out:

- The 'H' key only works some of the time (so I'm constantly having to read through and put the missing H's back in with a good firm punch on the key - annoying)

 - the cpu whines the seemingly standard high pitched whine (its a T7700) particularly under load

 - the battery and power adaptor let out an almighty scream when charging back up .

* these last two things are a real problem for me as I use this machine for music production and recording - production has the cpu running very high constantly, and the battery squeal will ruin recordings.

Is there anything you guys can do to help - please? I'm a new Dell customer, and I don't want to be disappointed with this machine.

Cheers

I recently bought this notebook and I was just wondering if it was possible to use dual monitors with it, even though the monitor I will be using isn't HD. I realize that other people used HDMI to DVI-D cables but I'm assuming that that would only work if the second monitor is HD... am I wrong? And I also have heard of people using docking stations for their notebooks and running dual monitors through that, but I do not plan on using a docking station....

Did you know that Dell castrated NVIDIA's GeForce 8600M GS video card?

I bought 30" Dell screen with this laptop and according to NVIDIA's website XPS's video card should be able to drive it http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_8M_techspecs.html, however blog on expert-exchage reveal that the card had been disabled http://www.experts-exchange.com/Hardware/Components/Video_Cards/Q_22721907.html  - scroll down to see answers.

Sadly, dell support staff nor theis sales guys have a clue whether it should or should not work.

What are you doing Mr. Dell?

If anyone experienced similar problem and found a solution, let us know.

I WOULD RECOMMEND A DIFFERENT LAPTOP!

So looking at the posts here, it appears that many people are willing to live with issues. Like the guy who says it is a great machine except the "H" key is not reliable. That kind of reliability to me would earn the machine admission to a drop test (from say 100 ft up).

I have had two of these poor quality machines. Both went back to Dell. Neither of them could sit level on a table and the "wave" in the keyboard is just annoying to look at. If I had bought an HP at Costco for $900, my expectations would not be that high. But buying a $2,500 full loaded Dell...I expect it to be perfect!

I contacted Dell after the first one arrived. Told them the problem. They sent out a tech. He had been sent a new palm rest by dell. To fix a warped case?!? The tech said that it would either need a new frame or they could build a new one. So I had them build a new one.

When it arrived, had the same problem. I have read enough posts (including some magazine reviews (e.g. CNET)) where the person reports warped frames. It is a sad state that consumers are apparently accepting these machines and living with them in this state. Instead of sending them back and sending Dell a message that the product manager needs to be replaced.

At any rate, there are two LED equipped Dells that will be on their outlet site -no doubt as they will consider them to be "like new". As for my need for a travel laptop, I would say the Sony is the top choice. I just wished Sony had partnered with Verizon instead of Sprint.

I ordered mine just after Xmas 2007 and received it January 8, 2008. Their delivery estimate was between 1/9/2008 and 1/11/2008. So far, everything seems fine. Of course, I would like to have seen higher resolution, but I knew this before buying. I also knew beforehand that anything larger than a 6-cell battery will protrude outside the laptop's dimensions. Having read many reader reviews, I checked for build irregularities, and have not seemed to have found any. There may be a very slight concave warp to the keyboard, but it is so slight that you might be able to only slip in a sheet of paper. To me, not a big deal. Maybe to those who bought this as jewelry being the first priority (design was a huge consideration for me, but light weight and power ranked higher). It may be too soon to tell if I will run into any issues, but that's what the Internet is for. Spreading the good news, or warning about the caveats.

I received mine on Jan 31st.  I have heard about the problems, the bad LED and Wobble.  I have a good LED.  There arent any dead pixels or lines or anything,  There is some bleading, but i do not get the whine associated with the samsung screens.  Unfortunately, my machine will not sit level on a table.  It is quite annoying.  I understand that these is are issues that will not interfere with the overall performance of the comptuer however, being that this is supposed to be a high end laptop, i expect better from Dell.  Its a shame that the problems havent been fixed.  They obviously know about them, yet still send out faulty machines.  Maybe this is why they discounted these $700.

I strongly recomment new XPS notebook platform. I ordered from http://www.shop.it.ee/est DualCore 2,2GHz model M1330 with discrete graphics and 7200 rpm HDD. It is by far fastest piece of computing equipment I ever had, including desktops.
