Dell Offers Three Consumer Systems With Ubuntu 7.04

It’s finally here. Later today, Dell will offer U.S customers three different systems with Ubuntu 7.04 installed: the XPS 410n and Dimension E520n desktops and the Inspiron E1505n notebook. These systems are now available at www.dell.com/open today. Starting price for the E520n desktop and the E1505n notebook is $599; the XPS 410n starts at $899 $849. Note from Lionel:  My apologies, but I had included an incorrect starting price for the XPS 410n. It will be $849.

Hardware support will come from Dell. Beyond that, users can turn to the Linux section of the Dell Community Forum for help and also get the latest updates from our Linux team at www.dell.com/linux http://linux.dell.com. Users also have fee-based options for operating system support through Canonical, including 30-day Get Started, One-year Basic and One-year Standard.

As John said in his post earlier this week, initially we will offer a subset of the component options we support on the three systems. We will continue to work with vendors to improve the stability of the associated Linux drivers moving forward. That’s part of our longer-term goal to increase the number of drivers that work at the kernel level—something Direct2Dell readers made very clear. We’ll get there, it just takes time.

Update 5-25: Beyond this first step of offering three platforms with Ubuntu pre-installed, another goal we have is to introduce Linux to a wider audience. If you're new to Linux or would like to understand more about open source, check out this StudioDell video: Linux 101: What's all the Fuss?

Dell is doing this because of your clear feedback in IdeaStorm. User dhart submitted this idea on February 16—the first day we launched IdeaStorm and it quickly became the #1 idea. Since then, about 30,000 community members weighed in to support it, and over 100,000 of you completed the Linux survey to tell us more.

In this vlog, I had the pleasure to interview John Hull and key members of his team that helped us get to this point today. In addition to John, you'll hear from Roger Noriega and Rezwanul Kabir, who were the desktop and notebook leads, respectively. You'll also hear perspective from Hatim Amro about work he did to get systems with Ubuntu through Dell's manufacturing process.

To the worldwide Linux community, I wanted to thank you for all your support. Linux-related posts are the three most viewed posts since we launched the blog back in July 2006. The Linux survey post and the Ubuntu 7.04 post are also the top two most commented blog entries as well—both received well over 500 comments. That makes it hard to keep up with comment moderation, but it's a problem I love to have.

Thanks for giving us a chance to show what Dell 2.0 is about. While this is a milestone that a lot of us will remember, it’s just the beginning—plenty more to come.

Wow, great to hear that the Ubuntu systems are finally shipping, congratulations and much thanks to Dell! I'll definitely be recommending these to my friends, only thing is, shouldn't there technically be at least a slight discount for the Ubuntu machines compared to the Windows ones? After all, Ubuntu is a free OS, while Windows costs money; even with the OEM discounts Dell gets and the discounts from filling up the machines with AOL ads, wouldn't it cost Dell less per unit for Ubuntu, at least in the long term? It would be nice to see some slight price reductions once the initial costs of launching the program are done, though I guess they're acceptable right now to cover the costs of supporting a new platform...

Anyhow, it's good to see that Dell is working with hardware vendors to have good linux-compatible, open-soruce drivers. Now, all I hope is that these Ubuntu machines will be available to the masses through local Best Buys, Circuit Cities, and other stores, as restricting these to an online-only program would severely limit their success; I'm certain that these Dell-Ubuntu machines have a massive market out there for non-technical users who simply want a stable, virus/spyware/malware-free, easy-to-use machine for web browsing, email, and productivity, and this market would be inaccessible if this were limited to an obscure webpage on Dell's site, like many previous "open-source" offerings were, rather than in the local electronics store...

To the first poster: Ununtu is of no cost to you, but the ammount of time and effort Dell's Engineers put into making this happen was not free.

After years of frustration fighting with buggy ACPI and implementing various other hacks to get my "Designed for Windoze" laptops to work maybe 90% with GNU/Linux, I am more than happy to pay the same price for a laptop that I know will be open and "supported" running Ubuntu.  Buying one of these offerings saves me valuable time and money.

I have been using GNU/Linux for eight years, and I never thought I'd see this day.  This is just awesome!
Thank you Dell!

Great news for the US customers. What about Europe and other parts of the world? Are you planning to ship to anywhere else than the US as well?

There are already vendors like System76 who provide GNU/Linux-ready laptops, but they also only ship to US and Canada. Shipping to Europe would make Dell's offer even more interesting.

Dell’s not really serious about Linux

I posted it at one discussion site with the comment that being conservative shouldn't be treated as "bad".

I can echo others' remarks:

But, I also believe that if Dell continues to pursue this approach of LISTENING to both customers AND staff, Dell will not only create its own success, but provide an example to others.

I'm happier about IdeaStorm than I am about Linux. Hopefully, many others (not just in business... government, anyone?) will CONTINUE to learn from this.

I'm happy to see this finally happen, hopefully Dell sees this as a long-term strategy and won't cancel the project if initial sales are slim.  After all, the R&D investment has already been made.  On that note, what are the possibilities of seeing Dell and Canonical partner on advertising, I would love to see commercials telling people they now have a choice, because most people still don't know.

For all of you across the pond, add an article to Dell's Ideastorm page to get these offered outside the US, then promote the heck out of it.  Obviously, Dell listens to you when you do that.  Heck, post the link here and I'll promote it too, even though I live in the US.

Way to go, Dell.  While the IdeaStorm idea was wildly popular, there must have been a good deal of politics to get this accomplished.   To have it go from idea to market in three months is a tremendous feat.

I am excited to hear that Dell will be working with vendors to improve drivers and hope this can speed progress on that front.

Best of luck with the program and keep up the good work.

Just wondering... how cheaper will these boxes be?

Given the fact that Ubuntu is free of charge... aren't people better off buying their PCs with Windows and then replacing it with Ubuntu? At the end of the day they will own a legal copy of Windows...

Or... hang on.... maybe buy the Ubuntu version and install a pirated Windows? mmmmm......

This is going to sound a little weird but it only needs one thing. A Made for Ubuntu sticker somewhere on the machine. The small OEM System76 who I suppose is your competitor makes stickers like that. Maybe you could use those. (Granted I haven't bought the laptop yet. It probably does have that sticker somewhere on it. I'll be buying the machine this very day actually, so I suppose I'll find out soon enough)

This is great news.

Certainly Unix and Linux have proven to be robust and dependable for our servers and mainframes. I would love to have that same dependability and robustness on our laptops. Ubuntu and OpenOffice have matured. I am glad to see Dell offer Linux as a factory installed option.

Vista seems like a step backward from WinXP. I think this Linux choice is a smart move at the right time.  I would like to see this offered on the Latitude D630 model.

Dell is a great company and has the best tech suport in the business.

And now, Linux on a Dell laptop.....Yes!  Definately, a step in the right direction. Thanks guys!

We will be giving these products **serious** consideration for our next hardware purchases.  Thank you.

What can i say,

Thanks to everyone involved!  It's about offering customer's a rich experience, but also about giving them alternatives.

I'd like to see the Ubuntu option listed with the Vista Basic/Home/Ultimate options instead of a special navigational path. Or as a compromise, the way you brought back the Windows XP option after Vista would probably work.

As far as price goes, you can make it the same as the cheapest Windows option and that would be ok with me. Because of all the adware you can put in the Windows version to make its cost to Dell approach zero, I don't expect you're realizing much, if any, savings per unit anyway. Of course the user is realizing a lot of savings by not having to buy things like Office.

Speaking of which, if you want to charge a small fee for distributing and pre-installing some of the big open source packages like Open Office I think that would be fine. People can download them for free of course but the convenience of having them pre-installed and working out of the box has got to be worth something. Such a fee is allowed by GPL and other licenses.

GPL allows you to charge whatever the heck you want for it.  Dell could sell it for $50 as selling the software, and not even have to dance around it as an 'install fee' or any such nonsense...

Sounds good. Now it would be nice if these systems were offered in Europe too. After all, the European market for computers running a Linux OS is much bigger than it is in Amerika.

The site is up, but I'm unable to check out any of the units. I imagine the site is overwhelmed!

If I click on any units, I am eventually directed to an Error page suggesting that I entered an invalid e-value code.

We'll need to check in again later, after the smoke clears.

Fantastic work, Dell!

I do agree with the posters that are eager for front-page publicity - it just makes sense to advertise a major revolution (even if only in one product line) like this.

Despite these, it is still fantastic work!

I recently acquired a E1505, so I was interested in what you guys offered in the E1505N.  I was a bit dismayed to see that you guys offered 512MB as base, and no ATI/nVidia graphics support.  Even your bare-bones base model through Dell Home offers 1GB/ATI X1400 as a base, and it is my understanding that nVidia provides a someone decent Open Source graphics support through the Linux kernel (ATI is more on the iffy side last I read).

One of the other things to note is that the system configured (now I know it isn't supposed "up and running" yet for another 15 min) is showing "No security subscription (McAfee 30-day trial)" as one of the base options.  So I think there are some bugs in the ordering SKUs that still needs to be worked out.

Look at how far Ubuntu has come without the support of Dell. Now that Dell has come to the party, Ubuntu & Linux in general can only benefit.

Have you used Ubuntu?  Its more stable than windows and is very nice its easier to use than windows  I have had 0 crashes using Ubuntu and Lord knows how many using XP I'll give you an idea of how easy Ubuntu is in comparison with say XP My roommate is not at all tech savvy and LOVES Ubuntu because its doesn't crash on her.  she tried using windows XP for a while and asked me to reinstall Ubuntu because she didn't like the windows interface as much

My opinion is that Dell should have focused their efforts in improving things for all of their customers instead of wasting resources just to please a small community that, although very loud and very vocal, are still in minority and will be for a long time to come.

With dell Offering Ubuntu the number of Linux users will grow because people will see that Ubuntu is STABLE unlike Windows.  Vista is really horrible as a Desktop OS because its way too hardware intensive Ubuntu is really a nice change in comparison with Vista. I;ve been using Ubuntu Since Dapper Drake  I have never had any hardware issues or anything with it. I tried Vista on my other Computer and hated it so I'll stick with Ubuntu for now.

Let's see if at least now that their wishes have been granted they put their money where their mouth is.

All the models have these ridiculous base prices (that nobody would ever dream of paying), but there is always some confusing sale going on. Furthermore, customizing the same model to the same configuration yields different prices depending what base configuration you start off with. It seems like you have to do a ridiculous amount of work to ensure that you aren't overpaying because you failed to notice some option that would have saved you $200 for no apparent reason. Whatever happened to simplicity?

These frustrations represent an actual sale. I should have bought a new laptop three weeks ago, but have been putting this off for Dell's linux offering. While I would prefer a 17" screen, I can forgo that to show Dell that there is really interest in linux. However, having the linux model $150 more expensive isn't Dell supporting those who would like to use linux, it's Dell gouging those people.

As I've stated, this is an actual sale. I realize it's just one sale, but indivual sales add up. I would appreciate it if somebody from Dell/linux would contact me about this. I'm not going to wait much longer to buy a machine, and will probably just end up paying the microsoft tax, otherwise.

I'd like to echo what Eric said.  I just customized an Ubuntu Dell notebook and was about to order it when I realized that I hadn't been asked to pick a graphics card.  When I looked at the specs and saw that it was an intel GMA950 I was pretty dissappointed.  I know that as a gamer and game developer under Linux, I'm in the extreme minority, but I'm afraid that intel's intergrated option simply won't do it for me.

I applaud Dell for creating an Ubuntu offering and I'm excited their leadership in "Desktop Linux" with my money.  I'm waiting on Nvidia 7300 option.  On a sidenote, until ATI get's their drivers together (which they claim they are doing), don't bother offering them as an option.

Keep up the good work!

Great - Thanks Dell.  I'm buying a new laptop next week to use ubuntu on - looks like it will be before you start shipping the fiesty pre-installs to the UK, but I'll definately be buying dell now.  Great to know that you're pushing for kernel level hardware support, and I hope (over time) you're able to push it out to more machines and wider audiences.

Seems Dell has two classes of customers. Those in the US and those outside. What's the problem in selling Ubuntu Dell computers in Canada? The French canadian keyboard ? That's a load of cr*p. Please wake up the folks at Dell Canada. They're asleep at the wheel.

Typed on a proudly liberated (Fedora Core 6) Dell Latitude D610 with a French canadian keyboard.

Why pay more for Dell with Ubuntu? You can build your own PC with much cheaper price with better quality parts. You can choose the hardware that is compatible with Linux and you can choose any Linux you like to install. Just learn how to build your own PC!!! It's easy!!!

I only buy PCs from Dell with Windows pre-installed because is cheaper than buying Windows separately. And that makes sense! I will never buy Dell with Linux! Period.....

All in all, Dell is still best PC that I like!

This is  great news indeed.

I wish you also start selling in Israel. Currently, Dell computers are not available to the private sector, or available for a very high cost.

If someone from Dell is seeing it, please contact me directly:

 Thanks,

Jonathan

Well, I was waiting to buy a new laptop.   Sorry, but I don't think this is going to cut it for me.  I priced out almost identical configurations in Windows and Linux.  The Linux laptop cost more than the same thing with Windows.  Why would I buy the Linux laptop when I could just wipe the windows drive and install Linux myself?  The price should not be more than a windows machine, period.

Also, where are the audio and video codecs?  If you want more money for a Linux install than Windows, shouldn't it at least come with the ability to play quicktime, etc?  Yes I can install them myself but then I may as well configure the entire system myself then.

I will not be purchasing one of these under the circumstances pointed out above.  I will not buy a windows one and wipe it either as the game being played here just doesn't sit well with me.

So while I am planning on buying new laptop, now it will not be a Dell.

I configured two identical E520's without using coupons, one with Vista Home Premium and one with Ubuntu. The Ubuntu version was $140 less than the Windows version. Every option cost the same except for the monitors, where for some reason the "No Monitor" option subtracted $130 on the Linux system versus $190 on the Windows system. Despite that, the Linux system was $140 cheaper than the Windows system. Nice!
