Details on Dell's 2-Way Opteron Server

The second Opteron server we launched today at Oracle OpenWorld is the 2-way PowerEdge SC1435. It utilizes AMD's Opteron 2200 family of processors (up to 2.8GHz). It supports up to 32GB of 667MHz DDR2 ECC SDRAM, and up to 1TB of internal storage via Serial ATA (SATA) drives. It also supports Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) drives as well. Like the PowerEdge 6950, it supports Windows Server 2003 Standard, Enterprise and x64 versions, it also support 64-bit versions of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 and Novell/SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 10.

In this vlog, Chad Berry, a development engineer who worked on the server walks you through more details. Ogg Theora format video here.

There's an edit just after Chad explains that the SC1435 targets a lower price point than the 1950. I hope in the unedited version he goes on to say that there will be opteron based variants of the 1950 and 2950 - as some of us need dual power supplies and extra slots in a 1U or 2U server!

It would also be good if you could clarify whether these new servers will be upgradable to quad core next year when AMD releases quad core socket F processors.

Aitor: Thanks for the comment.  Can't talk about unannounced products here, but you're right the SC1435 only has a single power supply.

In terms of the processor upgrade path, checked with the product team, and can tell you is that Dell plans to offer a seamless upgrade path to quad core performance on both the SC 1435 and the 6950.

When is Dell going to offer low-end preinstalled
Desktop Linux computers like these companies do?

If I am going to buy a server
I want my supplier to offer desktops too.

Dell's nSeries line of machines ship with FreeDOS and/or RedHat Linux (Precision Workstations).

Aitor,

The 1950 and 2950 are very good performing machines and have configurations available with Intel's Xeon (Woodcrest) processors.

As far as quad-core goes. I can't say yes or no. Lionel may be in a position to release such information.

I can confirm it is Socket F (1207)

Lionel, Jim,

Thanks for confirming the future quad core upgrades. It would be great if you produced 1U and 2U opteron servers with dual power supplies and the other features available in the 1950 and 2950. Sure, Woodcrest is faster than Opteron for some applications, but I thought that going quad core on Intel won't be a simple matter of a CPU swap; you'll probably have to change the motherboard too - so I imagine that the Intel quad core servers will be new models. There are also doubts aove whether the Intel FSB is going to be a bottleneck with 4 cores per CPU.

Thanks,

Aitor
